The Rabbi’s Daughter and The Midwife

Adina Bar - Shalom, eldest daughter of the revered Rabbi Ovadia Yossef, dreamed of studying psychology, however, fate determined she would spend many years as a seamstress managing a bridal salon. As her children grew up and wed, she decided to take action and establish the first ever academic college for ultra orthodox Jews. Her goal was to provide young religious men and women the opportunity to realize their educational dreams, enabling them to find employment and eventually support their own families. Above all, her success depends on her father’s blessing. Rachel Chalkowski, nicknamed Bambi, has delivered over thirty thousand babies. As head nurse and legendary senior midwife, she appreciates the hardships ultra orthodox women endure; giving birth to ten or twelve children, while the burden of caring for the entire family rests solely on them. Bambi established a charitable foundation to financially assist these large families.

Bambi and Adina each attempt to better the lives of ultra orthodox Jews, who often live in great poverty. Together they take a long, hard look at their society from a brave, feminine perspective. ‘The Rabbi’s daughter and the Midwife’ is one of three documentaries in the trilogy ‘Life in an Enclave’ (a.k.a. “Haredim”). For the first time, prominent figures from many segments of Israeli Ultra-Orthodox society express their views on the influence of a Jewish secular state and the modern-western culture that threatens to engulf them.

Art and Activism

Lecture by Austrian Artist Martin Krenn

Moderator: Tal Adler

Tuesday 17.02
20:00

Martin Krenn , born 1970 in Vienna, studied electronic music and applied art at the University of Vienna, where today he is a lecturer (at the University of Applied Arts). Since 2006 he is the president of Austrian Artists Association - IG Bildende Kunst. In his artistic work, Martin Krenn explores and probes socio-political subjects, focusing on strategies and methods of resistance to the governing relations of power. In this, he makes use of different media, mainly photography, video and internet and realizes his projects in the form of expositions (moving from the position of artist-participant, to that of curator), web, and interventions in public space.

Radical social practices and interventions in art question social normality. The spectrum ranges from co-operative, socially committed and participatory projects through to politically symbolic, provocative actions. An extended concept of art, subversive techniques and testing the so-called ‘freedom of art’ are deployed here mostly strategically. Martin Krenns lecture will discuss issues related to radical social practices in art. He will also show examples of his own projects, that he realized as both as an artist and curator as well as an teacher with students at Art University. He also will give insights in the practice of the Artist Association of Austria in which political claims are formulated together with other activist groups on the basis of strategic alliances.

Erased from Space and Consciousness:

Depopulated Palestinian Villages in the Israel-Zionist Discourse

(November books)

Guest: Omar Aghbaria, tours coordination at Zochrot, coordinator in the Karev educational program, and groups facilitator regarding the Jewish-Arab conflict.

Over 400 Palestinian villages were depopulated during the 1948 war. Their inhabitants, numbering hundreds of thousands, had fled or were deported.

The book elaborates on the marginalization of the villages within the Israeli discourse, which follows the physical erasure and dispossession: wiping out or Hebrewizing the villages’ names; masking or omitting their locations in official maps; ignoring them and their depopulation circumstances in information given to the public in national parks and other tourist sites that were created on half of the villages’ sites, and accepting their dispossession by inhabitants of Jewish settlements built on villages residential sites.

Embedded in the erasure processes, Kadman locates the ideology of Judaization, which results are evident in Israel’s space, demographic make‐up, as well as the limited citizens’ political and moral awareness. The book aims at increasing knowledge and awareness of the Palestinian depopulated villages in Israeli society, their lack undermines rigorous understanding of the current conflict and realistic conceptualization of future reconciliation.
