La-zet!

An evening of poetry reading at Barbur

Thursday 29.01
at 20:00

On the eve of the third day of the war in Gaza a call was made over the internet for poets, authors, artists, writers, musicians and others in Hebrew, Arabic and other Semitic languages to produce an anthology of works against the war in Gaza. Within a short time the organizers received hundreds of replies including poems, articles, stories and impressions. The anthology La-zet! was published in haste on the fifth day of the war as an immediate protest and reprinted in a second edition in the course of the war.

The war in Gaza is over for now, leaving in its wake death and destruction, much hate and nationalistic criticism.

At the evening in Barbur we will give voice to our call for dialogue and cooperation, as opposed to the government, on the basis of the La-zet! anthology prologue – to end the occupation and start long-term, multi-cultural action based on equality.

The anthology La-zet! is a cooperative venture of many publications: Ma’ayan, Etgar, Daka, Sedek, Galeriya Tarbut and Maarav.

Screening of the film “Six Floors to Hell”

Monday 26.01
at 20:00

At Geha Junction, one of the busiest in the Tel Aviv area, hundreds of Palestinians live underground. Young and old, they slip into Israel to find work and bring a small wage home. Their hiding place is in the underground parking garage of an abandoned, unfinished shopping mall, hidden from view despite its location. They pass most nights of the week here, six floors below ground. One of the mall’’s residents is Jalal who puts up with this hell in order to save money for his wedding while Nisrin, his fiancé, is waiting for him to finish the roof of their new house at Salem in the West Bank. From the darkness emerge still darker forms and ghostly voices. Under subhuman conditions, the men try to preserve their humanity.

“In the dark”, says Jalal, “the only thing left is to think about is love”.

After the film we will be holding a discussion with the Director, Jonathan Ben Efrat and Producer, Nir Nader, partners in “Video 48″.

Gaza–Sderot
life in spite of everything

Meeting with the project participants:
Robby Elmaliah (Sderot films director)
Simi Zubib (project participant)
Osnat Trabelsi and Arik Bernstein (project producers)

Short chronicles (2 minutes each) were shot by both Israeli and Palestinian teams, day after day for two months, from October 26 to December 23. The project ended a few days before Israeli bombing of Gaza. These short stories follow six characters from Gaza and six from Sderot, and the viewer is able to follow them intimately for 10 weeks. The stories are aired via the Internet every day, and the viewers are invited to make a direct connection with the project through blogs, forums, links etc.

Gaza Sderot is an original project broadcast by Arte.tv, the official site of ARTE, the French-German cultural television station, in coproduction with an Israeli team - Alma Films/Trabelsi Productions in cooperation with The Sapir College in Sderot, a Palestinian team - Ramattan Studios, a French documentary production company - Bo Travail ! and an interactive production company Upian.com.

From the site
This project reports on life as experienced by men, women and children in Gaza (Palestine) and Sderot (Israel): their lives and their survival on a daily basis. Under difficult living conditions and the threat of air attacks and bombings, people do keep on working, loving and dreaming. Life in spite of everything.
